Welcome to the Golden Door to Good Fellowship.

This is the new home for the Golden Door to Good Fellowship here in our little corner of Mayberry on WBMUTBB.com.

This is a place for members of the WBMUTBB Chapter to gather and get to know one another.

The talk here doesn't have to be about Mayberry. Members can feel free to talk about family, hobbies, friends and just about anything that crosses your mind. Things need to stay Mayberry-like in attitude and any posts that are "off color" or just plain ole "mean spirited" will be removed. I don't expect there will be any of that but I wanted to say it up front.

I believe this will give folks a good place to talk about some of those things they aren't allowed to talk about on the WBMUTBB Digest. I hope everybody enjoys this meeting place and that this will help our members get to know one another on a more personal basis.

The Fellowship Hall will be protected and allow only WBMUTBB members to have access.

If you are a WBMUTBB Chapter member:

After you register you must contact an administrator and ask him/her to add your account to the WBMUTBB group so that you will be able to see the Fellowship Hall as it is hidden from non-WBMUTBB members.
I hope you enjoy the new features and abilities of this forum.

I first met Jean when I came out to Palm Springs to visit my mother. She told me that her neighbor was a movie star and because I always went to the movies, I should know her. Well, I didn't. Jean lived across the street and came over for coffee. I had lived in West Germany for so many years that I just didn't recognize her.
In 1995, my wife and I spent the weekend with her in Grand Rapids, MI. That reunion of the Andy Griffith characters was real nice.
In 2001, we moved out to Palm Springs and became Jean's neighbors. My wife had to return to Michigan on family matters. One day, Jean asked me to be her escort to the amateur oscar night here in the desert. She told me I had to rent a Tux because it was such a night. I paid out $140 for the tux and escorted Jean to a nice evening. I was the only one present in a tux. I did get to meet several people of fame but it sure wasn't worth $140. I met Marlene Dietrich's daughter and that was that. Since 2001 until her death, I helped Jean with many a handy man fix-em-upper. We had to take her to the emergency room several times because of her heart too. Like so many, my wife and I miss her already.
One more little tidbit about Jean and me. Several years ago, her old car finally gave out and Jean was left without any form of transportation. I had the idea of a commercial. I wrote a sort of script having her speeding through Mayberry in a new Saturn convertible. As she whizzed bye Barney standing on the corner, she waved. He sort of took it as a challenge. He jumped in his old beat up squad car and gave chase. He finally caught up to the convertible and pulled it over. AS he walked up to the side of the convertible, his old flame turned and said, 'HELLO DOLL!" I was hoping she might get a car out of the deal if any followed.
I submitted my idea to the advertising people at Saturn and got the answer back, not interested.
The memorial for Jean was really nice. Tracy released six white doves and they circled overhead for some time before flying off.

Just want to say my part.

Peter M.
I will never forget the time Jean and I spent in Burbank in April. I was so very happy to have been able to meet her and talk with her about Twilight Zone -- mostly of the episode "A Most Unusual Camera" in which she starred. I'm a big fan of the original series with Rod Serling, and we talked of the good memories of Rod and the show. Jean was more than a wonderful actress, but after that moment, I got to see a personal level with her. She was a tremendously dear, sweetheart of a lady. I will always remember her kindness. Albeit, I have not known her personally for a very long time, Jean was the type of person who left within you the impression that once you know her, you're a friend for life. She will truly be missed.

Rest in peace, Jean. I'll never forget you.

I first "met" Jean in the early 90's via the telephone. Eventually we met in person and as was the case with Jean, you weren't a stranger with her very long. We met at several Mayberry events, culminating with an event in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1995. I was fortunate enough to "direct" Jean and tribute artist Allan Newsome in the very first of what would become many re-enactments of the famous husband-beating convict and Floyd scene. I still have the script from that, signed by Jean "To my favorite director"...

After spending that week with Jean in 1995, the fan/star thing faded and we just became good friends. Since I was and am a local actor and director, Jean became very interested in whatever I was up to in the theater. We stayed in touch often. Whenever I was playing a role, or directing a piece, she was always there with advice, discussion, and insight about the project.

A few years ago I was playing "Big Daddy" in a production of "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof." I called Jean, and we discussed the role and the play. She shared an interesting story with me about the playwright Tennessee Williams. She said that once in the 1950's in New York she went into the famous actor's night spot Sardi's after a show. She said that she saw Tennessee Williams at the bar with playwright William Inge. As Jean passed, she heard Williams say to Inge "Why don't you just call the damn thing 'Picnic'?"

A funny story she shared with me was regarding her then young sons and their Cub Scout pack. As a field trip Jean had arranged to take the pack onto the set of "The Betty Hutton Show", a show that Jean was a regular on. When things started bustling around the set, Betty Hutton had such a foul mouth... well needless to say the boys got an education and more than they'd bargained for!

I, too, received a telephone call from Jean on Christmas morning on more than one occasion, and I exchanged Christmas cards with her every year. I spoke with her as recently as early August and she mentioned then that she had some health concerns. She wouldn't tell me what they were though - she didn't want me to worry. She knew I would have.

I was in the jungles of Haiti working at an orphanage when Jean passed. It wasn't until I returned to work here at home on November 10th that I was sitting in the employee break room and casually flipped open a copy of the Lansing State Journal and saw a blurb about Jean's passing. I sat stunned, with tears in my eyes. Part of me is stunned still.

When I saw the death notice Jean came flooding back to me on so many levels. I remembered the long phone calls, the stories she shared, and the many times we spent together. I am grateful for every single one of those. But more than that, I am grateful for all of Jean's performances. Thanks to those, I get to visit Jean whenever I want. I get to see her young, and happy, and smiling, and making me laugh. Thanks for that Jean.

It is my sincere hope and wish that Jean and Howard McNear are rehearsing that convict/FLoyd scene right now. I'm hoping that they want to get it just right before they show it to us when we get there. And we'll get there in only a moment.

So long, doll.

-Lyle
